The steps to replace toner in a multifunction printer (MFP) or copier varies by model and manufacturer. These step by step instructions will be applicable for replacing toner in an IM C4500 Lanier, Ricoh or Savin.
When to Replace Toner
Most multifunction printers display two messages relating to toner replacement. On a Lanier IM C4500, the messages will appear at the top of the device’s control panel.
The first prompt is a warning message that your toner is getting low. At this stage, you will not need to replace the toner. However, you should make sure you have a replacement cartridge on hand. If not, use this message as an indicator to order the replacement toner. Do not replace the toner yet, as there is still some toner left in the bottle. Replacing the toner at this stage will waste toner and as a result, money.
The second prompt indicates that your toner is truly empty. At this point, the machine has used all of the toner in the cartridge. You will need to replace the toner in order for the machine to continue working.
